Who does not need visa to travel to Finland?
Citizens of the United States and of the following countries may
enter Finland and reside there for maximum of 3 months without visas
for holidays, business and conference travel:

Who needs a visa to travel to Finland?
Citizens of all other countries, no matter the length of stay or
purpose.
Who needs residence permits or work permits to travel to Finland?
- all persons (except Nordic country and EEA/EU citizens) who
wish to reside in Finland for more than 3 months;
- all persons who wish to study in Finland for more than 3 months;
- all persons who wish to work in Finland no matter the length
of stay; and
- all persons who wish to marry and permanently reside in Finland
All persons needing residence or work permits also need valid visas.
Where can I get a visa or permit application?
The Consul has forms of applications for visas, residence permits
and work permits. A form of application for visas (but not residence
permits or work permits) may be downloaded from www.finlandla.org/schengen.pdf.
What kinds of visas are available?
What must accompany my visa application?
- 2 completed and signed visa application forms
- 2 passport size photos (35mm x 45mm or 2" X 3")
- valid passport (valid for at least 3 months beyond requested
visa expiration date)
- notarized copy of valid resident alien card (green card) (if
applicable)
- proof of airline reservation/travel agency itinerary to and
from Finland
- travel insurance for at least $30,000 coverage, or medical insurance
that covers Finland
- notarized parental authorization for applicant under 18 years
(if applicable)
- valid visa for country of next destination after Finland (if
applicable)
- invitation letter from Finnish hosts, or if not available, name
and address of host or hotel or other accommodation in Finland
(for tourist or business visa)
- invitation letter from business or business contact in Finland
(for business visa)
What must accompany my permit application?
- Completed and signed permit application
- 2 passport size photos (35mm x 45mm or 2" x 3")
- valid passport
- introduction letter from prospective employer (for work permit),
- letter of acceptance from school and proof of any scholarship
(for residence permit for study),
- proof of housing arrangements (for work or residence permits),
- bank letter indicating sufficient funds to live in Finland
(currently at least $5,000 for residence permits),
- statement from Finnish Labor Department obtained by applicant's
Finnish employer.
What happens then? How long does it take?
The Consul will forward the completed application to the Consul
General in New York for official action. Applicants may also send
the completed applications and support documents directly to Consul
General in New York. The following times for processing applications
(beginning when the application is complete in all respects) should
be allowed:
- Visas: 2 weeks
- Residence permits (students): 8-12 weeks
- Residence permits (non-students): 13 weeks
- Work permits: 6-8 weeks
Certain consular services are available only through the Consulate
General in New York:
- Receipt of applications for refugee and asylum status
- Receipt of applications for Finnish citizenship
