Art
Before independence in 1917, there existed a tension between
budding Finnish nationalism and Western influence. National Romanticism
featured peasants (true Finns) and rural landscapes (true Finland)
since the cities were considered planned by foreigners. Leading
artists - Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Pekka-Halonen, Eero Jarnefelt,
Juho Rissanen, Helena Schjerbeck are shown in the Finnish National
Gallery (www.fng.fi).
More recently the Modernists have become prominent, among them
Salari Tokka, Vaiino Kunnas, Sulho Sipita and Ragan Ekelund; all
of these are featured in the Kiasma (Museum of Contemporary Art
in Helsinki) (www.kiasma.fi).
