In the evolution Finnish National Romanticism, the Kalevala was the most important literary event. After several years of travelling through Karelia (eastern Finland and western Russia), Elias Lonmrot collected and compiled folklore materials and sung poems into the epic poem Kalevala in 1835, as expanded in 1849.More recent famous authors are Aleksis Kivi, The Seven Brothers; F.E. Silanpaa, The Maid Silja, Mika Waltari, The Egyptian; Arto Paasilinna, Year of the Hare, Vaino Linno's Under the Northern Star (trilogy) and The Unknown Solider; and Tove Jansson, Moomin Family books.
