Tourism and The Economy
During 2001, Finns made over 1.7 million leisure trips
outside Finland, with 58% having destinations in the European Union,
12%
in other Scandinavian countries, 12% in Russia and other Baltic
countries and only 3% to the United States. Conversely, during
the
same period, almost 4.2 million foreign persons visited Finland,
of which 47% came from other European Union countries, 27% from
other Scandinavian countries, 29% from Russia and only 3% from
the United States.
The Finnish economy is the 6th largest in the
European Union. Primary export products are electro-technological
products (31% of total exports), pulp and paper (22%), machinery
and equipment (10%), metals and metal products (9%), vehicles (Finns
assemble Porsches and Saab convertibles) (6%) and others (22%).
These products are exported to the EU (56%), rest of Europe (18%),
Asia (10%), North America (8%) and others (8%). Finland manufactures
70% of the worlds luxury cruise ships in shipyards in Turku and
Helsinki. The primary import products are raw materials (41%),
investment
goods (24%), consumer goods (23%) and energy (12%). These goods
are imported from EU (55%), Europe (21%), Asia (13%), North America
(8%) and others (3%).
